  • Unique report into financial support Posted on 13 April 2015

Commissioned by the Office for Fair Access the report reviews the current evidence on the impact of institutional financial support (such as bursaries, scholarships and fee waivers) on access to higher education and the experience of students within higher education study.

Nursaw Associates found that financial support is not the most significant determinant in either the decision to apply to higher education or in the choice between institutions. However, from the institutional findings it appears that there is a sizeable minority of students that feel that financial support does impact on their decision to enter higher education and in choice of destination. This is not fully reflected in the national findings.  There are some tentative indications that this could be those students from the lowest income families.

More research is needed.  Nursaw Associates also suggest that the sector considers greater standardisation in evaluation questions to enable comparisons and aid further research.
